I had them made in India over 20 years ago and used them to print lots of my early fabrics. My contact was Sally Holkar, who put me in touch with the skilled craftspeople she'd met while setting up the Rehwa Society in 1978. Together with Women Weave, Sally's organisations have brought the dying craft of weaving back to the Maheshwar region. Sally's grit and belief has helped hundreds of women to learn a skill which allows them to be self-sufficient and look beyond their villages.
Meanwhile, back in my studio, these blocks are now treasured decorative objects, which I hang on the wall like Julian Opie sculptures.
